Maple Chest

Instructor: Coleman Coker
Course: Hand Fabrication (Independent Study)
Semester: Summer 2016
Duration: 5 Weeks

Designed as an architectural composition in wood, the chest is composed of a roof, columns, beams, and walls, expressed in that order. Round edges achieve a softness in hard maple, a contrast of tactile expectations. My challenge was to avoid a loss of nuance when moving from sketchbook, where lines were rough but intentional, to dimensioned drawings and finally to planed lumber. I imagined that the finished piece, both in and out, above and below, would be equally presented, considered, and treated.
