Designed by KIN, a research and design partnership with Kaethe Selkirk.

We moved from Austin, TX to Phoenix, AZ in August 2016. Moving always presents a unique set of challenges, one of which is choosing what to keep and what to leave behind. Our mattress and bed frame did not make the cut. It was easy enough to find and purchase a new mattress online. However, issues arose when we began looking for bed frames. Options we found were either clumsy or out of our price range. We decided to design and build our own.

What you see below is our Plywood Bed Frame. We designed with a goal of creating a frame to suit our needs as well as providing a template for others to build from. It was important to us that the frame was relatively inexpensive, easy to assemble and disassemble, and had storage underneath. With no access to power tools other than a drill, we designed with off-the-shelf materials and dimensions that could be cut in-store (Home Depot, Lowe's). Aesthetically, we wanted to create something that felt like it was floating. We wanted a quiet design that was clear in composition and solid in construction.

We welcome you to use or adapt this design for your own needs.
